VIRTUAL JOB SHADOW
Welcome to your first day on the job! Watch this video to see what a day in the life of a wildlife conservation officer is like.
STEP 1: Go outside to your backyard/schoolyard. If you do not have a backyard go to a nearby park or open space.
STEP 2: Write down ALL the wildlife you see in 30 minutes. A simple T-chart is all you need – click here for a free template.
STEP 3: When 30 minutes is up, assess the biodiversity of your sample. How many total organisms did you find? How many different types of organisms did you find? The more of both, the more biodiverse your area is!
STEP 4: Share a picture of your biodiversity survey sheet in the Student Showcase to build your resume!
STEP 5: Take a deeper dive and categorize all the organisms you found according to family, genus, and species. Do you have low biodiversity in a specific area (ex: mammals, birds). If so, why may it be low? What could be done in this local ecosystem to improve the biodiversity of this species?
