VIRTUAL JOB SHADOW
Welcome to your first day on the job! Watch this video to see a day in the life of a Waste Management Specialist.
Try your hand as a Waste Management Specialist and find out with this fun activity!
STEP 1: Use an online search engine to find the closest waste facility to you. (different places call it different things – some search terms to use include: dump near me, transfer station near me, or garbage collection in your city)
STEP 2: Go to the facility’s website and find the following information:
– What type of trash disposal method(s) are used (recycling, landfill, incineration, and/or composting)?
– How does trash get there?
– Once it’s there, what happens to the trash?
– Where does the trash go? What is its final step?
STEP 3: Bring your findings to life with a Trace the Trash Map! Hand draw or use a free online tool (such as Canva) to represent the path of trash in your community (the four bullet points above) and help local citizens understand where their trash goes!
STEP 4: Post your Trace the Trash Map in the Student Showcase to inform your community & build your resume!
