PART 1:
Quality Control Analysts ensuring consistent product quality in industries like food, pharmaceuticals, and manufacturing. Try it with a fun quality control analyst game! Here’s what to do:
- Get something that comes in a package with a large quantity of the same thing (ex: M&Ms, raisins, cereal).
- Empty the bag out on a clean table.
- Go through all the items in the bag and look for any that are ‘poor’ quality (ex: misshapen, much smaller, much bigger, broken, discolored, etc.).
- Put any ‘poor quality’ items in a pile together.
- Once you are done sorting, count how many good quality vs. poor quality items there were in the package.
- What percentage of the items were poor quality? Were you surprised?

PART 2:
Now that you understand the basics, it’s time to devise your own QA (quality assurance) strategy in a case study! Here’s what you need to know:
- Quality Control Analysts use chemical tests and measurements to assess product quality.
- Imagine you have been hired by your favorite soda company to monitor the coloration of the soda. The quality of the soda is impacted by changes in chemical equilibrium. They have been having a problem with lighter colored soda, which is not as flavorful.
- You learned that the color intensity is related to the equilibrium between reactants and products, and think Le Chatelier’s Principle might be able to help you.
Here’s what you need to do:
- Research Le Chatelier’s Principle to see if it can help you. [HINT: controlling the equilibrium between dyes and solvents may help]
- After researching, devise an experiment to show the soda company what is causing the light colored soda and poor taste, and how they can fix it.
