Did you know that nickels, dimes, and quarters used to be made of silver, a valuable precious metal? For this activity, go through all your spare change on a silver hunt! Here’s what to look for:
- DATE: The date each coin was made can be found on the bottom, under the head. Coins made before 1964 are often made of silver.
- WEIGHT: Silver coins are heavier than today’s coins (silver is more dense than the metals used today).
- SOUND: If you knock a silver quarter against another piece of metal it will have a higher-pitched ‘tink’ sound than a regular coin.
If you find a quarter made of silver it is actually worth around $4 due to today’s price of silver! You can keep it, or bring it to a jeweler to cash in!
