VIRTUAL JOB SHADOW
Welcome to your first day on the job! Check out this video to see what a day in the life of a Gravel Pit Manager is like.
STEP 1: Find a large box and layer the bottom with gravel. Then, fill it up with sand, dirt, rocks, etc! This will be your gravel pit (aka quarry site) model.
STEP 2: Now it’s time to imitate the natural elements. ‘Water’ your pit to stimulate rain. Then leave it overnight outside or in a fridge to mimic freezing temperatures.
STEP 3: Time to extract your gravel! Using everyday tools of your choice, try to extract the gravel by disturbing as little land as possible. If you have toy dump trucks or something similar that is ideal. If not, get creative and choose your own tools!
STEP 4: How did your extraction go? What could you do as a gravel pit manager to combat the effects of weather (ex: rain, freezing temperatures) in your gravel pit? Make at least two changes to your gravel pit model and do it again!
STEP 5: Share your results (before and after your improvements) in the Student Showcase and build your resume as a gravel pit manager!
