VIRTUAL JOB SHADOW
Welcome to your first day on the job! Check out this video to see what a day in the life of a EMT is like.
STEP 1: Get a stuffed animal, or pillow if you do not have one.
STEP 2: Place the stuffed animal on their back on a flat surface. Kneel beside it.
STEP 3: Start with 30 chest compressions. Your hands should be on top of each other and centered on the stuffie’s chest. Your shoulders should be directly above your hands with arms straight.
STEP 4: Push down at about 100-120 compressions per minute with a depth of 2 inches. Make sure the stuffie’s chest returns back up before starting another compression.
STEP 5: After 30 compressions, tilt the stuffie’s chin back and pinch their nose (this is to open their airway). Seal your mouth over theirs and breathe into the stuffie’s ‘mouth’. Their chest should rise and fall back down before you give a second breath (use your imagination!). If the chest doesn’t rise, ensure the airway is open and repeat.
STEP 6: Once you’re familiar with these steps, practice on a stuffed animal (or a pillow if you don’t have one). Take the next step and get your CPR certification if you’re ready for the challenge! Share your thoughts on learning CPR in the Student Showcase.
